CPT SpeedStart®
Saving the Planet One Stop at a Time™
Description
A Belt-driven Integrated Starter Generator (B-ISG) system, including all control and power electronics in a single housing. CPT SpeedStart is a liquid cooled Switched Reluctance machine, coupled to state of the art electronics, providing premium performance with a very high and efficient power output up to 205amps.
The CPT SpeedStart B-ISG offers outstanding "Driver Change of Mind" performance, with response times less than 10ms to get full current into the windings. Only Switched Reluctance B-ISG's can give this excellent "Driver Change of Mind" performance. There are no pre-flux delays or waiting for the flywheel to slow before pinion engagement.
CPT SpeedStart is optimised to use the standard 12V vehicle architecture to deliver maximum benefit with an almost silent, instantaneous starting event from a single compact unit.

Applications/Benefits
High volume CO2 reduction is something that every OEM requires. A 5% reduction in fuel consumption is something that every consumer would like. CPT SpeedStart can deliver up to a 5% reduction in CO2 on the NEDC when integrated into a modern gasoline or Diesel powertrain. Much greater savings can be made while driving in urban situations.
Micro-Hybrid Stop-Start is the cost effective way to gain significant CO2 reduction across a large range of powertrains. Relatively simple integration enables mid-cycle production plans for major OEM’s.
Additional benefits can be gained from intelligent regenerative charging during vehicle decelerations.
Switched Reluctance (SR) Technology
CPT SpeedStart B-ISG was designed to use SR motor technology from the outset. During back to back comparisons with Permanent Magnet (PM) machines, the SR package came out on top in every aspect. Working with SR specialists, world class design and manufacturing experts, the motor has matured through the development to a very robust automotive unit.
The SR technology offers simple motor construction, accurate control and very high power density / efficiency. This SR technology and innovative software controls allow CPT SpeedStart to achieve the class leading "Driver Change of Mind" performance.
Liquid Cooling
CPT SpeedStart B-ISG uses a patented liquid cooling system that keeps both the motor windings and the power electronics under thermal control. High performance and high current require a guaranteed cooling medium; something that ducted air cannot achieve when ambient conditions are extreme. Liquid coolant is required from the normal vehicle cooling circuit. For full operation, the system temperature should not exceed 105oC.
Liquid cooling offers several advantages over ducted or forced air:
- It provides a very stable environment for power silicon devices
- It does not suffer from water & dirt ingress like traditional air cooled, claw pole machines
-
Packaging is simpler, as there is no need to seek cool air from the front of the vehicle

Cranking Comparison

CPT SpeedStart 'Measured' System Efficiency

2.0l Common Rail Diesel - Capable
CPT SpeedStart B-ISG has been developed on European diesel powertrains, mainly a 2.0l common -rail I4. Using a standard 12V architecture, CPT have successfully and repeatedly cranked the 2.0l diesel powertrain under many different climatic conditions.
CPT SpeedStart fast and silent cranking of a modern diesel powertrain is quite impressive.
A typical crank trace for this starting event can be seen in the diagram above. CPT SpeedStart can be implemented on Diesel and Gasoline Powertrains up to 3.0l, depending on the application.
SpeedStart® Diesel Demonstration Vehicle
Controlled Power Technologies have installed the SpeedStart B-ISG system onto the Volvo S.40’s DW.10, 2.0l I4 Diesel, using the INA Tensioning System.
The CPT vehicle control system has an excellent stop-start strategy that demonstrates very effective starting performance with repeatable sub 0.5sec starts.
